Nepal Pallas's Cat Project

Co-Founder and Investigator

Pallas’s cat (Otocolobus manul) is a small wild cat species distributed in the grasslands and montane steppe of Central Asia. It has been classified as ‘Near Threatened’ in the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species and listed in CITES Appendix II. Pallas’s cat, also known as Manul is a new cat species to Nepal which was discovered by project co-founder Tashi R. Ghale in 2014. Except for the camera trapping record of this elusive felid, there is no baseline information available on the status, distribution, and conservation threats of this elusive felid in Nepal. Nepal Pallas’s cat project focused on a comprehensive assessment of its status and distribution using interviews, sign surveys, and camera trapping and community based education and awareness raising in the Manang region of the Annapurna region of Nepal. The project documented the evidence on the historical presence of this felid in the Manang region which was published in the CATnews issue 63.
